Like everything we do in life there are right ways to run your piping, and wrong ways. So following is the way I do all my piping. This by far is not the only way, but these examples will work with out any flow problems.

Check out my new pump. I've been working on it for a while and am very happy with it. It can pump 200 gpm (12,000 gph) and only uses 120 watts. It also has 4 inch inlet and outlet. The pond that I am using it on is gravity fed in and out. Let me know what you think. flow and power test ...
My pond is up and running just fine but I need to fix a suction problem that is occurring at the exit of my two bio filters. They are MB bio filters with hamsterballs on the outlets (per Birdman's design). I have modified it a bit from these pics by adding an elbow down from the outlet so the...
:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:With a lot of hard work and Patience this is the final product let me know what you all think. working on the water forgot to turn the UV on, Yes we get a lot of sun so I will have to think of what to do without taking away from the pond any ideas are welcomed
Several months ago I had a thread dedicated to helping me figure out what needed to be done to this giant swamp in my backyard to make it into a koi pond. What I have pretty much decided to do is add -2 Koitoilet I bottom drains -2 pool skimmers -2 pumps (around 2500 GPH each) -2 55...
Hi All, This is our first pond and we are super excited! It will be about 6K gallons, 12' x 13' x 5' with a large underground vault for filtration. We are planing to build more deck around it and put a pergola with some ivy over it to help protect from excess sun and winged predators. Here...
Have a nice weekend to every body!!! My name's Pham Ninh Son, from the South of Vietnam. This pond I had build at the end of 2008. Now I want to change it, because it's not good for a koi carp, the waiter is dusty and not clearly. I post this pond here to get all your help to build a new pond...
Today I went to Orch to get some 2" pvc pipe, saw the black ABS pipe only cost $5.50 per piece which is 10 ft long. The white PVC pipe cost $9.00 per 10 ft long. One is white and one is black. Here is question,,,, do the ABS black pipe offer same kind or almost same kind quality as the PVC pipe. ...
Here is a site plan of the koi pond I will be putting in this Summer. I've never done this before, and would appreciate feedback on the filtration system I have illustrated in red. I am especially wanting to know if the make and model of the components are the best option for this application....
23'x11.5'X6' Pond 6'x10' main filter pit and another 5'x5' pit feeding a water fall Thanks to Ken Wallace for the filter system and pond design. digging for the pond will start in two weeks.
I've been working on this project for a while now and alot more has been done but I thought I'd share with everyone what I've been up to :D:
I just finished glueing my 2 55 gal S&G filters to my pump a few days ago. I started it up yesterday and notice a leak on the bottom of 1 of my drums, but it was not coming from any of my joints. I think perhaps - there's a crack in my drum. How do I test? And if there is a leak, can I seal...
Okay, not sure where to start, but the new pond has been in the planning stages for awhile now. Was hesitant to take the golden shovel as I wasn't sure we'd get it going this year, but the shovel arrived about 3 weeks ago and we waited to hear from our contractor on when he could start, but nothing...
I am so glad I came across Koiphen or this would have been a disaster (it still might). I recieved poor advice from a local pond store, but this site saved me from some huge mistakes. I just wanted to thank this community for getting started on the right foot, I am more of a reader than a poster,...
A question that keeps coming up in pond build threads is one about lights. Some light from above, some from within the pond. It would be a good idea to post some photos of various setups, so members can see different options. I have ambient lighting around the pond and seldom need to view the...
I have finished the concrete blocks and want to start to parge and slope the insides. I know there is much debate about angles etc... I am wondering if someone could make a recommendation on 1) how much slope or angle to the bottom drains and in the corners? 2) How to do it? What materials?...
Finally started on the new pond! Marked the hole out (rough) for my friend to dig it. My younger brother and i started plumbing the filters today. I got to see my beautiful Fiance today, she stopped by to check out the progress(love it when she does). Then we took a break and went to the fair! then...
Many people have asked about my sand/gravel filters so here's my construction thread. But 1st, all credit has to go to Kent Wallace. He is the one that originally showed me this type of filter. I build mine different from Kent, but the concept, and operation are the same. This filter...
In 2008, my wife and I purchased a vacation home with a Koi Pond. After finding this forum, I quickly realized the pond is all wrong… >1,500 gallons, 7 Koi (20” – 26”) and 2 goldfish, no skimmer, no bottom drain, submersible pump to a “Little Sister” filter, four shelves from 8” down to maximum 30”...
I have very little money for the pond so that is my limitation. I realize that it means I will need to work harder to keep the pond in good shape. I still need to landscape the yard but this is a start. I have so much that I want to do, but it will probably take me a few years to get most of it...
Here are some pix of my pond redo. I inherited a small 350g puddle when we moved into this house five years ago. It has always been my desire to redo this pond and make it bigger. After two holes and two unsuccessful patch attempts in the old liner I decided to increase the size. The following...
Hey, everyone! I'm a total newbie to ponds, never built one in my life! I am, however, an avid aquarium hobbyist (my current passion is planted tanks), so at least I do know my way around the basics of fish and plant needs... I'm really stumped with how to design this pond. I think my...
My ES 5500 gph pump must have a short in the switch. It kicks out the gfci each time it's plugged in. I'm not sure what to do. Is it as simple as unpluging the switch module and replacing it or what and where will I find the switch?
I have started to measure and model my new indoor pond in the basement. I read some threads here and did some modeling. 8.2' long and 5.4' wide and 3.2' high(depth). The room im gonna build it in is a long rectangular room. The pond width will go from outer wall on the left side of the room to...
Hello, Can anyone tell me the difference between the WLim Wave II 1/2 hp and 3/4 hp external pumps? The half horse power pump is one hundred dollars cheaper, has more output at more head and draws slightly less current. The ad says the 3/4hp has more pressure to pump through bead filters and is a...
I am new to the pond world, but I put my first pond in this summer. I have a problem with a leak that I find very strange. I have a 1000gal pond that has been in for about 2 months now. After filling it with water, I would lose about 1" of water every few days. Fairly normal I think for 100+...
Uniseals work really well for putting pipes into different filter chambers but can be difficult to install, esp. the bigger sizes. Use a good hole say for drilling your hole. An out of round hole made with a jig saw might not give you a water tight seal. The hole size is always make the hole 1...
Howdy Phriends, Last year DW and I had planned on a pond redo. Never got the chance because we spent the year taking care of sick parents. So this spring we decided to pick up where we left off. The plan was to convert the existing watergarden into a pond.:oyes: Allow me to take you on...
Hi Guys , was wondering if you could help with things to do for the pond for winter. I have 2 x 4" bottom drains feeding 2 x 330g s/c then these go to 1 x 330g bio tote with air pump and diffuser. I also have a skimmer line ( wide mouth but the basket is way 2 small and shallow ) . Both...
New poster here... newb at ponding also. I've been soaking up all of the great info here (no pun intended). As much as I read about all of the different filtration types, I still can't sort out which ones would be appropriate and which ones would be overkill for my application. I know you need more...
I am tripling the size of my little puddle from 300g to ~1,000g. Instead of 18" deep, I am going to 3' deep. It is all in ground w/ nothing above ground. When I'm not working on the pond I keep it covered and try to divert water away from it. I went out on Saturday and one of my sides has...
Hi all- I am new to ponds, and have only fancy goldfish. I am about to begin construction on a small above ground pond, will be 18' long x 3' wide x 2' tall. The location is in front of my house, mostly shaded and partly covered by the overhang of the roof. As I am planning I am wondering...
does anyone have experience with shut off switches for pumps in case the pond water level gets too low?. we have an open filtration system, and we had a weird occurrence last weekend where the flow was inhibited down to the pond and the filter backed up and overflowed. we were home and caught it,...
A couple of months ago, I picked up a Hakko 40 air pump. Due to the possibilities of low energy consumption, I wanted to experiment with the idea of incorporating airlifts into my pond design, and my intent was to use the pump to play with some airlift ideas. Since that time, I have come to the...
I can't think of any pond build threads where the pond wraps around the corner of a house. If anyone out there does something like this - can you post a link to your thread, or a picture or two? In other words, something like this?
This build consists of a falls at the hilltop....dropping 20 inches into a short stream that drops 8 inches at 45 degrees, into a 300 Gallon Rubbermaid tub (with strapping for bacteria formation.....dropping again another 20 inches into a 12 x 16 pool that will accomodate 6 quality koi.. max. The...
Well........ Its been up and running for exactly a year now and aside from some early on plant introduced fish lice its been running like a fine oiled machine....... My water has remained clear even in weeks of 95+ weather and full sun and the fish have been growing like weeds. I've been forced to...
 Here's the beginning!:yahoo: Gotta clean out this old pond so I can start building the divider wall to separate the wet part from the dry part and also have to finish putting the holes through the side for the BD line and the skimmer line, which will go in through the back side. ...
i have taken down my small pond, rocks and pea stone, was a mess. pump finally burned up so pretty much sealed it's fate. what i am looking to do is a patio, bird feeding station with a waterfall type birdbath, as i will miss all the birds bathing in the pond and waterfall, especially in the...
I would like to raise a topic for discussion here. I have been researching something and would like some opinions. What are your opinions on The Anoxic Filtration system? And could we all please stay calm and try and give logical and factual based idea's and opinions. Note : I am...
I started this project about 2 years ago after determining that is was much easier to leave the Koi indoors all year instead of having them outside for 4 to 5 months and the rest of the year inside because of the climate here in Western New York. The project is still not finished. However, the...
I am pretty sure my calculations were correct, but please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Attached is an Excel file, that shows the forces exerted against a single sidewall of the tank.... You can adjust the value for the length of the sidewall and that will adjust the forces on the...
Hi all pond freaks. I have never before had a pond or koi, so my knowledge about this is just out of reading and asking in pond/koi forums. I got my dream about my own pond many years ago, but now this last summer I have been planing a pond in details and now I have started to build. My...
I have been putting it off long enough. I purchased SS tilted wedgewire last year. I have searched for a tank/container to use for the sieve and have decided to build it out of plywood. I was able to purchase marine grade plywood in 3/4" thickness but nothing smaller. I will fiberglass and resin...
I wanted to start a brand new thread with everything in the first few pages for some folks who wanted to know how I created my phoam phraxionator. I have made one that will flow around 3,000 gph out of 8" PVC, and also, one out of 6" PVC. Others have also made the one out of 6" PVC and have...
What is it about fall and wanting to start digging?? I'm about ready to start on the lower pond... (if you have a lot of time... here's a link to the upper pond thread :):http://www.koiphen.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71437&highlight=icu2) Some details... it'll be about 6' wide,...
20' x 12' x 6'
I just installed a brand new 30" 6.0 cubic foot bead filter with a blower about a month ago. It worked great for the first 2 weeks; the water cleared up within 2 days but now I have a problem. After back washing the bead filter, the water coming out of the filter really slows down to almost a...
i am gonna make my waterfall with a weir and blocks what kind of weir would work the best. I only want to spend 100 dollars will the savio 16in be enough, oh sorry pump is a ES2500(skimmer, pump, S/G, then waterfall)? I would love to see some pics of simple waterfall designs on block ponds too to...
Here it is: No niche skimmers should be the FIRST choice. They are the easiet to plumb in They are the safest for all but the smallest of koi they are the least obtrusive they are versatile they are CHEAP be smart use no niche skimmers
Let me apologize up front for asking questions that have likely been answered a hundred times. I've scoured the archives, and can't seem to find what I'm looking for, so I figured I'd ask directly. I understand the real power of public forums extremely well, and know this is the real place for real...
Hello, I am looking for a good auto filler and do not even know where to start. I do not have any place to put one in a settlement chamber or anywhere in the filtration system, so I have to put it directly in the pond. I want it to be small and non intrusive to the fish. I have heard that a...
In another neck of the woods, there is a discussion about the Eric filter, see http://www.koi-bito.com/forum/pond-c...hi-filter.html (http://www.koi-bito.com/forum/pond-construction/12036-koi-kichi-filter.html) warning: Strong language, death wishes and explicit terms, rated NC-17 I...
In drilling my US Plastics crates for my shower filter, I drilled too close to the edge. The water drips outside the crate below. I used the P&L adhesive to fill the holes around the edge. The instructions say to let cure for a week. Do I really need to wait that long before adding media and...
I have been putting my fist pond in over the last couple of weeks and so last week I started the waterfall. It turns out the waterfall is more difficult than I thought. I put it together once and it leaked from every where. I tore it all apart and this time, I used expanding foam on most of the...
found this prefilter on line and would like to know if anyone has installed one and has feedback on the performance. waterco is an australian company, and the product looks impressive.
Yeah I am back, the guy who got the Koi bug and went out to dig a hole. Tore up the ol deck. The big old deck, cut it to bitty pieces and threw it out. Why? Cause it was in my way! The wife said shucks. Nah said a bit more than that:fmouth::fmouth::fmouth::fmouth:. Then I went to digging. Suddenly...
I just finish installing a no niche skimmer to my 2100g pond. I have 2 inlet line going to the suction side of my performance pro cascade c36 pump (new pump). The pump is about 2 ft from the pond and is 5 inch above the pond surface. One inlet line is the skimmer and the other is the vortex outlet...
Does anybody know whether PP will damage the stainless steel wedgewire being used in the sieves? Anybody use PP with a sieve? Carl
Well, I'm digging a big hole in my yard :D: I've gone through various designs and filtration plans. The original design dubbed the "Manta Ray" was beautiful and lovely...but due to various factors we decided against going all out. The Manta Ray Design:
I see Wall mart is now selling paint on truck bed liner in one gallon cans. I haven't read the label yet but this looks like some kind of paint on Polyurea. Anyone seen this?
Can I add a 2'' leaf trap to my es8500 ? Or would I need somwthing bigger ? Thanks Jon
I see that Birdman has installed a Cestus Sieve on one of his ponds. I know that he has a wealth of experiance in building and aqua culture. I also see other builders using them. I don't know if I have seen anything that Kent Wallace has done with them. I can see the advantage of a smaller...
So I have had my pond up and running for 3 plus months now and I am now losing water. I have lost 7'' of water in 6 days, it was hot as hell last week and cool in the am, could this be the cause? Temps went from 98 down to 60 in the mornings. There is over 1000' of pipe buried in the ground so I am...
Okay, dumb question here from a new DIY'er... According to the directions for the Koi Toilet 1: 1. Bottom Drain Base Assembly: Attach the shorter lip side of the provided 4" coupling to the Drain Base, followed by a 4" PVC pipe. This should be glued, right? When the directions talk...
not only between the top box and the next one (it eventually stopped) but also out the bottom of the bottom box around the pipe - the PL pulled away from the box and water was leaking out pretty rapidly. :( ALSO, I had water coming out of the foam outlet - the 3" T I have in the pipe just after...
Construction is just about ready to begin. Just waiting on locates for buried facilities in the yard and a sketch from the regional health authority of my septic field layout to confirm its location (just bought the house and the health authority apparently has the layout on file). From what I can...
Hi everyone; I'm on my way to finish my formal koi pond and it's filtration made of a vortex with foam prefilter and a fluid k1 bin. Of what I've understand (tel me if I'm wrong) the only thing left after a mb filter is the nitrates... But then what about them? Here in France most people are...
Now that oorah's water is getting back to a proper level after ammo, pH and KH problems. He had another question that still needs an answer. His pond is 1200 to 1400 gallons with several large fish. Currently has an Ultimate 1000 I believe. So, does he need a bigger filter? I will probably buy...
I would like to pull from the bottom drain directly into garden beds (aquaponics) which will filter and then drain into a media bed (complete the bio)prior to going back into the pond. I want the solids to go from the pond into the garden beds. Is there a pump that will handle those solids? Do I...
Here is my latest creation!! Had to demo an existing 1000 gal pond to make way for new 15500 gal :construct New pond is 12x28x6 block foundation. It will be about 4.5 ft below ground and 1.5 ft raised above ground. It will have two diffuser bottom drains with Airteck 40 for...
Anyone here who know where its possible to order sieve screens online ? 300 micron. Tried looking for it here in norway, but i had to order it custom made and that costs a lot.
what are soem good fines filtration medias? as of right now i plan on fitting my hayward filter with sinking beads but im wondering if there is anything else out there that would be good for this application. i need 3.25 cubic feet of media
Hi I have a hose coming off my filter that I usually just put to the surface of my pond with a fountain head on it to create areation for the pond. The thing is since my pond is so small, it covers most of the surface of my pond and I cant see the fish at all. I know that may sound selfish to...
Well, the construction has begun after a few years of waiting, planning, and saving. Below are the plans of my koi pond followed by pictures. I will be consulting Steve with the construction of the pond. Please check in from time to time and see the progress! Cheers, Austin Little Rock,...
I know this has most likely been discussed before but I have a new (I think) twist. I just read an article regarding a motar mix to use for streams/waterfalls that is non porous and waterproof. It is supposed to make regular mortar mix three times stronger. Once dry it becomes so dense that it...
I have been running a trickle filter with MP2C for a year now. This was a challenge to see if the material would clog. Fish load varies between 5 and 10 tosai and nisai. 500 gallon polytank 750 GPH turnover 0.5 cubic feet of MP2C No prefilter, just a midlevel pickup
First, I would just like to thank you all that contribute to this site. I have learned so much from you all, now I've decided to begin my pond construction thread. My original plans would have been disastrous had I not found Koiphen. Please feel free to ask any questions and I am open to all...
Considering how expensive bacteria house media is, has anyone ever tried this approach? I know some use lava rocks, feather rocks, or bioballs and obtain some success. What I'm thinking of doing is put 4 layers of the mats in the bottom of the trays (1.5"x4=6") and place lava rocks on top. My trays...
In designing this potential pond of mine, I have a quick pipe question. How do you run PVC pipe through the concrete? For a block pond, you'd run the pipe along the outside of the wall, then have it poke through in the appropriate place. For a gunnite installation, there is no "outside" of the...
I just finish building my pond and then turn on the pump to test it out. When I turn on the pump everything seems to be working great but I hear a very load clingy noise. Is this normal. I thought pump are suppose to be quiet upon operation. Is the pump defective?
Hi, I did a search and couldn't find what I was looking for. Can anyone help? I will be using "Keystone Legacy" retaining wall block. Each block has a 1.5" lip (setback) is what they called it at RCP. Here are the demensions of ea. block.... (H)6"x(W)16"x(D)9" 1.5 block per sq ft
Hi, The water in the new pond is ready for fish so I got the chance to move a few today. The last few days I slowly brought up the temps in the smaller pond to 75, so the two pond would match in temps. I was really surprised with my baby Chagoi's being so big. Not just length but girth too....
Please submit photos of just the waterfall portion of your pond, so we can all share ideas and help others who aren't sure how they want their waterfalls to look, yet (like me :D: ). Can't wait to see everyone's falls!
Hi Need some advise. I have a small pond that is finally going to get some landscaping/stone in a few weeks when my helper gets here. I would love to build up the sides before the stone. Maybe 6 inches or more. I can't make it deeper or wider due to cement slabs left by the home builders. ...
I'm in the process of upgrading my pond I am going to put in a QT tank. Only second year ponding, so my small heard has some individuals in it that I really would like not to lose if possible. I know a S&G filter does not take much head to run. A little less if you use the chicken grit, which I...
How to neutralize the mortar that comes in contact with the water in the pond? I know that the acetic acid and formic acid is used. As I have understood, the pond filled with water and then added acid and this will be to neutralize. for my case, I think of neutralizing the mortar between the...
First, I'm still new at this and I started my first pond at the end of May - one of the sides collapsed at the end of July. So now, I'm spent the last month rebuilding, and I plan to lay the liner tonight. Here's my question - what is the best way to conform the liner to the hole. Should I...
Small DIY. pond from Denmark (Yes it is a lillet country in europe) I gendem longer followed your threads. And thought that now was the time my pond must have a proper filter. The one problem I had was that the bottom of the pond were made of steel concrete , so a bottom drain was not...
So, do I really need to run my air diffuser on my koi toilet? This darn thing prevents my skimmers from pulling anything off the water (I did a bad design). Also, It makes viewing fish VERY difficult...my water is green and I rely on viewing fish from the surface which is super choppy when its on....
I need to upgrade my pump. I need figure it out what is the main differecne between the self-priming external pump and the pump is not self primp pump . The self-priming pump cost at least from $600 from the Performance Pro Artesian. The not slef priming Pump (Performance Pro Cascade) cost only...
Hi every one! I'm currently building a 50 000 liters koi pond with the dimension of 6 by 6 meters and an average depth of 1.5 meters, can any one give me some feedback or advise on how well is my DIY 380mm bottom drain will works?
did you ever have something fight with you tooth and nail all damn day. only to look back at the end of the day at what you got done and say wow i got it done. lol that was my day. got my fluid bed in, my settling chamber in, my empty hayward filter in, everything else moved and plumbed. ponds...
A couple of months ago I went over to help a friend who's Cetus was leaking. It was leaking at the no-hub connection from the bottom drain pipe. It was suggested that the leak was caused by a manufacturers defect at the bottom of the sieve but the problem was NOT caused by this. It was caused by...
I want to put in a gravity fed sieve to replace my settling chamber, but I cannot think of a way to make it work with my pond. My pond is at ground level and my ground is flat and heavy clay. So if I put the sieve at ground pond level, the waste will have to be pumped out somehow. Draining it away...
word has it that some idiot is creating a phoam phraxionator that should run about $75 including bio balls, and flow around 900 gph. then again, it could just be a rumor....
Morning, building a quick lil water feature in the back yard, got a tear right in the bottom of the liner. I have some PL and extra liner, drained and dry.. with PL and the two liners bond? Its smack in the middle on the bottom.. Thanks --Craig
My first pond build. This site has been amazing. The help and caring of fellow pond builders is truly remarkable. I am pretty handy at DIY type things. I remodeled my kitchen, my bathroom, my basement, so I think I am up to the task with good advise. Since I am totally new at this I hope...
Here is the newest pond we built for John & Sarah in Miami, FL. It is an open-water system pond of 13,000 gallons. It was constructed in one week with another week of setting the water fall. We set up four water falls run by a 1/3HP PerformancePro Artesian Pump. No filtration required. Gin quality...
What skimmer's does everyone use for their block wall ponds? I'm in the process of picking two for mine and was wondering what others have. FYI...I will have 2 skimmers feeding via 2" to a Sac Advantage bead. The savio's are too big for me...the Bermuda's right now look the best. Plus it...
Earlier I posted a question about the Nexus brand of filters and got pretty positive feed back. I understand that they can clog and over flow. Blanket weed seems to be a culprit. We get allot of sun in Va. Allot. And lately the heat is high here in Chesapeake. The newer line carry's a built in over...
