I promised Kit I would get the registration forms for new lilies in earlier this year...which actually is the logical thing for me to do in that the necessary photos of the plants are a heck of a lot easier to get now than in November. Been on the fence about this one for some time now, but it...
I wait untill it is cold. Some people even wait until it is 40*F. I don't I just decide at the time when to do it. I rinse off the dirt and take the tubers out of the roots. I set it aside for a little bit and lay it on a baggie with the lily name on the zip lock bag. I then roll in Captan anti...
The bickering & insults have become very boring to most of us that post in water gardening. Last year I sent PM's to several of you. The bickering did stop. As I mentioned, the water garden forum is meant to be a peaceful, relaxing place to come & see each others pics of our blooms & ponds. To...

Well, this new blue tropical waterlily, called 'Out of the Blue' has been coming along nicely the last couple of months since first using that name for a blue blooming waterlily two months ago. Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/...
(Just wanted to see how many hits I would get. ;) ) Here's one of my giant bullfrogs in the Watonai Pond.... :D: 'I see you looking!' :)
Let's start off right with one of the best hardies...COLORADO!!!:yahoo: Alexis and a Night Bloomer both from Kat. :D: :cool3:
I can't think what this could be other than a plastral scute from some turtle or other, but at nearly 5"....can't say as I ever noticed on before that large. Big cooter maybe?
I, for one, am always curious about the derivation of plant names....especially the lilies. For those interested, N. immutabilis was named for the characteristic that made it easily differentiated from N. gigantea..... the color of the bloom is 'immutable'. Unlike the gigantea, the color on...
This Sept is the bicentennial of the Independence of Mexico from Spain and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution. It's a big deal. One of the national TV networks has made these incredible videos of 3min on each of the states of the Republic. I thought I'd share the ones from the two states...
Well, once in a while you try a waterlily and you do everything just perfect. It starts early well, in a cold frame ahead of season. You give it the best dirt, a solid nudge of fertiliser, give it a favoured position, it even has months of heatwaves to perk it along So what does it do? plunk...
(drum roll sfx) And the award, for the first waterlily bloom of the year (Sounds, of envelope being shuffled sfx) goes, to the turtle, that ate it Now I know everyone is excited by such an event, however, not all waterlily enthusiasts are to be complimented on their taste, timing or...
I wonder what surprise there is, on a dull day like today. Ooooh look, there is a hardy waterlily open already, that's nice Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/ http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l42/adavisus/

I was cleaning my 800 gal. water garden and found this round white mass(floating), sticky like sperm, and white eggs maybe..No plants above the water look anything like this..There are NO fish or frogs in there..Any ideas?
Hum, looks like this little package might unwrap itself anytime soon Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/ http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l42/adavisus/
This category might have way too many contenders, be tricky to choose between. Which is, half the humming and hawing fun of it, which is pink and which is red yet another story For folk in cool climates, 50's and 60's waters 'James Brydon' might be a pleasant choice. Flurries of umpteen...
I store my tropical lily tubers in metal popcorn tins. They have a tight lid and so far it has always kept the mice from getting to them and eating them. Better safe then sorry.
There is that precious moment, just after dawn when all the dew is still moist in the air, oxygen is wafting a very fresh buzz, just before that scorching fireball, makes everything toasty again... Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/...
Well that made a refreshing change. Fetching these tubers out involved no lifting of tubs, no compost, nominal fertilising, no dirt, no digging, or any of the nonsense put about by nursery folk that like their customers to kill them sooner rather than later. All you do is reach, snip once,...
due to the heat and there is algae growing in the water, which is starting to smell a little stagnant. What should I do? I want to save the tubers if I can - should I just leave them alone? How do you over-Winter them when they are in large containers rather than in a pond? thanks for any...
This is the third or fourth time this year that I have overflowed the pond. I use well water in the pond and have to go to the pump room and flip up a breaker to turn on the well pump. I forget to turn it off if I don't hear water running. Today I put the hose in the pond to add a little water...

although they're not nearly as pretty as many I've seen here. Here are some today - though -my Miami rose is starting to open a new bud and of course Rhonda Kay is doing her thing - blooming her little heart out. I've noticed that Rhonda Kay pales as the bloom gets older - is that normal? ...
Late Summer is a time to grab those last minute shots of the water garden, doing its thing. This tall aquatic is pleasant to set against a setting with a blue sky reflection, the whimsical cap on the plant makes a convenient pixie hat to tease the little ones with harmless tales to capture...
Years ago I had a lily I called, but never registered, 'Cactus Jack' that I really liked...but killed. It is the lily in the first picture. I've been trying to get something similar since and this is the first bloom on a possible replacement. Kind of ratty looking, but it is a first bloom and...
Taken @ DD today:yes:
Blue violet, purply blue might be an interesting comparison... Not so many hardy blues are to be anticipated, but, not a biggy, they do have the far more vivid reds Leopardess likes some steady warm temps and chugs more vivid tones than usual, as do a few others. Oh look, some botany experts are...
Between Summer heat over 100°f, typical Winter freezes in the teens and colder, toss in the occasional hurricane or drought, it can be something of a riddle to figure out what waterlilies to tinker with next On a mud pond, where water levels can fluctuate a foot a week at times, hardy waterlily...
What could be better than just one real good whopper? well, how about two bountiful whoppers! It's a better way to fill a viewfinder when there's plenty to fill it! Now a theme like this just might attract a few peculiar inspirations, it is an open ended concept, a nice pair but what the hey, as...
open today - here's a pic to explain: Also had a white bloom which is pretty regular for me. Couldn't get it in the pic, unfortunately because it was hidden behind standing lily pads. I also took some pics of the fish, but they weren't in a posing mood today, so I deleted them - maybe...
Also known as Water Hawthorne... :D: Supposed to be a spring bloomer but mine decided to bloom again now because of the cool, delightful weather we've been having. :cool3:

After six months, tucked cosey in its pot of loam, clay and whatever pond mulm settled, tropical waterlily St. Louis gold is taking its first baby steps in 70°f waters to see, feel, what the gollygoshdarn happened... Snow, ice, blustery storms, who knows what carnage went on all about it while it...
I have no idea why last nights bloom was white and pink except weather was cooler. And the first nights bloom stayed open all day instesd of closing.
I might plump for June Allison's today! So consistent! So peeeeerky! Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/ http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l42/adavisus/

There's almost a grim fascination to see Star of Siam fail, for the first time. It crossed some sort of rubicon today, perhaps analysing the weather stats might figure it out Perhaps the atmosphere is thinner, clearer and ultra violet light more harsh? hmmm Regards, andy...
Just found this discounted to $2.50. Just couldn't resist. :D: Mother Nature is giving Elena a wet down... :cool3:
This is a lily from a Japanese hybridizer, Mr. Yasuhiro Satou. It is thought to be a cross between N. gigantea and N. colorata....although I do not believe there is DNA evidence supporting the claim. Even so, it is a beautiful lily and if the cross is correct, it would be only the second known...
I started this from seed Craig sent me this spring. :yahoo: Thanks to my daughter Jamie for taking these pix and emailing them to me while I am at work.
We were netting some big bullie tads for a customers pond, and look what came up in the net! :D: On my 'Monet' mouse pad...
This is the first bloom on a lily specifically designed to be grown in the shade . . . the second bud is following right behind . . .
I have 2 lotus in my pond one is still going stong cutting runner off ever week, the other all the leafs turn brown and no runners is this one dead. Here some photo of the lotus, and other plants
Took these just before the skies opened up. The Western Bands of Earl are giving us some much needed rain! :yahoo: No wind whatsoever. :cool3: COLORADO!!! :D: And this is a chloritic leaf of a lotus runner that is growing without soil. Pretty reflection!
Ultra Violet! ;) :D:
Dogs may not like August, but the tropicals are loving it and coincidentally enough, after our coldest winter on record, Ma Nature is trying to make nice and giving us our hottest summer on record. Bit of a busy day, so these are just a few pictures I was able to get between chores.
New For Me This Year:yes:
The last pond pix of August... A well grown E. ferox pad. :D:
How's this for hand-eye coordination... :rofl2: Bull's Eye View... ;) :D:
Great way to start September...a walk around the ponds! :D:
Sepals in Nymphaea can be quite variable. While many are some shade of green, they can also be lightly speckled, so speckled they are nearly black, bi-colored with a harvest gold accented by a green racing stripe....even prickly. They vary sufficiently that unopened buds can add another...

Frank I know you have uses tumblers with sucess. I know Sean has used dixie cups with great sucess. Here is a link on Victoria Adventure. I know he grows wonderful lilies. And huge ones too look at his pics on this link. ...
My Aquatic Centerpiece... :D:
As for Vickie, you are on record as believing that bees pollinating a lily can change its color, so maybe the bees are responsible. Posted by Craig on the Caliente thread. I have no idea if I am on record as saying that or not. Makes no difference to me if I am. LOL As for bees changing...
Sharon is having some problems with her water plants. Her hyacinth and water lettuce are yellowing and she wants to add something to the water or soak them in some form of fertilizer which will nurse them back to their vibrant greens. My thought was miracle grow and/or chelated iron. Any...
ok, so, you have some pastel tones. Well, ok a lot of pastel tones. It's not the end of the world. ok, the others are so much brighter and the colour tones are stunning, astonishing, vibrant, so diverse. Yes some are multi coloured and changeable with it even Yes, so they have some petite...
They came, from somewhere, nowhere, springing up in nooks and crannies... Perhaps from a packet of seeds, or maybe those sneaky buds got up to some mischief beneath the liypads... But now, you might not part with them for all the tea in China... Regards, andy...
This uninvited guest helped herself to one too many lily basket this week. She can join the dinky little 5" male she brought along with her Thank goodness the turtle trap could fit her in it... :chef: Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/

Craig, I never said the lily was not yellow, and I did not say or illude to you mis-representing the lily. As I said, it is one of my favorites. I do not know what "prime conditions" are but I have learned something in this discussion. Plant bloom color can change based upon conditions. I did not...
Just a little bit of what I've been looking at lately. The purple tropical just showed up this year. A nice creamy yellow with lots of wide petals. My Mankala Ubol imitator. Lavender Day is doing its half yellow-half lavender pink thing except it's only one third yellow this year. ...
After spending as much as a humungous $20 on kerosene heating a stash of tropical waterlily tubs outdoors on the coldest nights, which true to their fickle and unreliable nature, set no worthwhile tubers, I expect to see some results! Star of Siam, on its first bud. Regards, andy...
Finally found a classy pot to pot up my new variegated Papyrus 'Starburst'... Cyperus albostriatus 'Starburst' The hand thrown glazed ceramic pot is the same mossy green as the stripes in the leaves. Plenty of room to grow too, in fresh compost and Osmocote. Will grow like a weed and be in...
Pastel might be a category to fit many of the paler toned blooms, that don't quite fit among their more vivid bretheren pas·tel (p-stl) n. 1. Of, relating to, or made of pastel. 2. Pale and soft in color. 3. A soft delicate hue; a pale color: a room done all in pastels. 4. A sketchy or...
Same bloom, same day. One taken with clouds, one without, minutes apart Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/ http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l42/adavisus/
The perky vivid tones of aquatic iris variegated yellow Flag are a blast on a dull day. Growing a modest two foot tall and spreading maybe three feet wide in five years, this one you may not need to chase around the pond with a chain saw quite so often. Regards, andy...
Easily overlooked when you are fuming... Where is that dad blasted rootin tootin bud, come on, giddyup, get those petals open, make it snappy, stop witheering! Awww don't turn into shoddy cabbages in 15 minutes flat! Oh no! seeds everywhere! all the time those poor old lilypads are slugging...
Its been a long warm summer:yes:
Just a couple of pics of what is in my pond today.:D:
Not always of the third kind, though, some of the 'occasional' visitors to the abundant oasis could give some aliens a run for their money Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/ http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l42/adavisus/
Here are a couple of shots with another Rhonda Kay, standing taller than the others! The stem on this one is very sturdy and there are 4 more buds coming up! I'm thrilled!
White waterlily... Now, my mind is going to change from time to time (alzheimers and all) but I do think I'll be looking forward to seeing what this new white day bloom tropical waterlily will do this season. As for a name, mebbe Juwahle, I might just struggle to come up with that. And...
Gollygoshdarn, Iris laevigata Colchesterii, first aquatic iris of the year to bloom. Never saw that coming! Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/ http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l42/adavisus/
Most have not bloomed as well as they should because I let the WH get out of hand and smother some of them out. I also have not fed them as well as they should have been fed. It has been so hot this summer that the blooms are getting scorched really fast. Look at these 2 new lotus leaves. Seel that...
Greetings! I bought a small pot of Parrot Feather some time ago. I positioned the pot such that the top of the pot was just below the water level, with much of the actual growth extending above and along the water surface. For several months, the stuff really grew like crazy, and spread out...
They shade, they extract nitrates, on a hot day they can cool water to a pleasant seventies instead of deadly nineties... on a good day can do an eyecatching number Let's all hear it for your favourite floaters! Now these are the original shifty characters, here today, gone tomorrow, in...
I really love this lilie, it has been blooming like crazy... I wish I would get more blooms at the same time tough, I only get 2 or 3. But I can't complain their always AWESOME. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as i am.
As most of you know I had about 4 of these winter over in an unheated fallen down greenhouse. We had one of the worst winters ever. I have 5 stock tanks full of them. This pond is 19 foot wide and 24 foot long these cover about half of it. I have even thrown some away. Can you imagine how they...
Ah, with many a pond destined to an uncertain fate, to be choked with unsuitable plants, isn't it good to know a pond does not have to be destined to such a nasty fate Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/ http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l42/adavisus/
ooh, now that is a difficult choice. Indeedy Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/ http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l42/adavisus/
one flower at a time, but that's ok because they're always big and beautiful! Rhonda Kay is really tall - stands at least a foot over the surface of the water! Beautiful color, too!
Mine are blooming above all 3 plants
On a good day, ever dependable goes like clockwork tough as boots rather well behaved nice bloom to pad ratio, Joey Tomocik can do the most chilling cool yellow on a brittle cool day in Spring, hmmm? Regards, andy http://www.flickr.com/photos/21940871@N06/...
More of your seedlings are budding out... :D:
Now I really dont keep up with hardies the way I used too. However most of my hardies that I ever had were I think pretty old varieties. Now I dont have a Pink Ribbon but is that the first new hardy that most of you all have?
I've never been a particularly big fan of gingers, but this one caught my eye when I was visiting a friend in Homestead and I asked for a start. It originally came from the collection of Dr. Monroe Birdsey, who while not a household name, is a legend among tropical plant people in South...
Favourite sunset blooms... At least, I think that kinda sorta covers the category of sunset tones? Most days I might plump for Albert Greenberg, a.k.a Al Greenberg, a.k.a Albert Greenburg (could be a shy or shifty character, gets about a bit) Tho... One of TurtleMike's little hotties...
this year my tropical lilly looks bad hasn't bloomed and is putting up small leaves,It's only 8 inches deep has had plant food added. anyone with an idea please help. she is a h.g. hitchcock
First waterlily of the season is up - Alba. I remember thinking how pretty this was last year...till the rest of them opened up. Will remove from the pond next spring I think. Things of interest: Despite each of them spreading greatly (35' radius on both of them), neither Mrs. Perry D Slocum...
if my Euryale Ferox was going to bloom. The pads kept getting bigger, but today I saw a bloom! The pads had grown to 30" and are huge, and finally a bloom! The pics were taken with my cell phone, so they not great.
I have a shady pond and thus am limited in the plants I can grow in and around it. I have 2 lillys and one is doing very well the other OK. Last week I saw that one was sending up a flower bud. Every day I would check on it in order to catch it opening. I often come home for lunch and planned to...
plants from Bonnie Hales (she has nice plants) and now I have some giants - several hundred, at least, to the point that I've put some in my main pond, thrown some away, some in the with the fish and some in the wet section of my filter system - the 2nd settling chamber - they're thriving in there,...
The beautiful majestic lotus stands tall contrasted with the gorgeous violet blooms of the water hyacinth surrounding it.
