  2. Hydrogen peroxide or sodium percarbonate overdose comments

It is Spring and the ponding main algae season is upon us. A friend of mine overdosed a fish pond with hydrogen peroxide in the form of Baquacil oxidizer and asked me to write about it. Please be aware overdosing is not a good thing, particularly in a pond that is relatively clean with...

  3. Sodium percarbonate uses in fish ponds

Sodium percarbonate is the most convenient form of buying and storing a ready supply of hydrogen peroxide for various uses in fish ponds. I buy mine from: http://www.chemistrystore.com/sodium_percarbonate.htm The primary use of sodium percarbonate is as a laundry bleaching agent. For...

  4. Post So how many types of algae are there?

I have a nice 1/4" carpet of algae growing on the sides of the pond. Never had string algae and sounds like I don't want any. Had green water last summer that UV took care of right away. But... last summer and this year I have tiny bits of suspended algae floating in the water. It is so small that...

  5. Basic Water Quality Limits

Basic Water Quality Limits Water Quality: What is it? It’s a funny thing. When dealing with sick fish you'll often hear someone say "maintain excellent water quality" as part of the treatment. Likewise, you'll hear "my water quality is perfect". But what exactly are the acceptable limits of...

  6. ORP is Higher Really Better?

For those that don't understand ORP or reduction potential here is a good article to read. http://www.rhtubs.com/ORP.htm Now we know the higher the reading, the more pure the water. We can use meters to monitor ORP or controllers to control additives such as Ozone to increase the OPR or purity...

  7. Of course, we must talk about Hardness

Introduction To Hardness Defining "Hardness" The term "hardness" causes lots of confusion in ponding circles. Everyone knows that koi like "hard" water, but very few seem to know what hardness really is, how to measure it, and how to change it at will. Fortunately for us, many areas of the...

  8. Does anyone have an electronic PH meter made by Milwaukee?

Hi, Late Dec. we finally purchased an electronic PH reader, Model PH51 made by Milwaukee. We bought the extra stuff to calibrate etc. Well, I'm beginning to question whether it's working properly. There's been ice covering 3/4 of pond for past week & too cold for the weekly water change so I've been...

  9. Smelled Chlorine

Ooops. :) Now we get to the forensics. Call it bench-racing if you like. :) When you have a problem like this, it's important to get rid of the emotion and go for the data: Here is the only data Marie posted as to the fish health issues: "...all the fish were pale and slow, several of them...

  11. Those that kill - You Gotsta monitor

Ammonia: Ammonia. The mention of that word strikes fear in the heart of most ponders. Chemical symbol NH4, ammonia is a colorless gas which is readily soluble in water. The Killer Among Us Without a doubt, ammonia is the #1 killer of koi. Ammonia causes a stress reaction in koi while...

  12. Next Most excellent Roarkian installment:pH

Next Most excellent Roarkian installment: pH: To chemists, pH stands for potential of hydrogen. In simple English, pH is a measure of how acid or base the water is. The extended pH scale runs from a pH of 0.0 (strongly acid) to a pH of 14.0 (strongly base). You can think of the pH scale...

  14. Nitrite spike

I just finished my pond a few months ago, and added koi and filtration about 6 weeks ago. My pond is 2000 gallons with a Challenger 40 (? rated for 2500 gallons) bead filter, UV and vortex prefilter. I have been testing the water regularly and have had consistent PH at 7.6, ammonia at .25 - .5, and...

  17. What are the "ideal" water parameters

I have been reading with great interest the discussions on water parameters and testing. I did a search on Google for ideal water parameter for koi ponds, and didn't get results like I wanted. My question(s). Is there a complete chart somewhere that will tell me what the "ideal" ranges are for...
